Webopedia Personal Search Tool

Webopedia's search utility is an easy way to search for computer- and Internet-related terms directly from whatever Web page you are viewing without having to go to Webopedia in a new browser window. The search tool sits in your personal bookmark toolbar ready to be used when you need the definition of a technical term.

SEARCHTOOL

Installing the Webopedia Search Tool:

To install the search tool, simply drag and drop one of the following links into your personal bookmark toolbar (Netscape) or Links bar (IE) and you're ready to use this new feature.
PLEASE NOTE: Simply clicking on the links below will not install the search tool.

Netscape Users (version 4+; Mac and PC): WebopediaSearch
Updated search tool now allows Netscape users to search for multi-word terms!

Internet Explorer Users (version 4+; PC only): WebopediaSearch

Troubleshooting:
If you have problems adding the button, please try the following:
  • If you use Microsoft Internet Explorer, you may need to add webopedia to your list of trusted sites before adding the button:
    1. Select the Tools menu.
    2. Select Internet Options... on the menu.
    3. Select the Security tab.
    4. Select the Trusted sites icon.
    5. Click on the Sites... button.
    6. Uncheck the Require server verification... checkbox.
    7. In the Add this Web site to the zone field, type: http://www.webopedia.com
    8. Click the Add button.
    9. Click OK twice.
After you install the button, you can remove Webopedia from the list of trusted sites, if you want.

  • If you use Mozilla, you may need to drag the browser button to the Bookmarks button, then place it in the Personal Toolbar Folder on the menu that appears.

  • If none of this works, you have to create the button manually:
    1. Drag the Webopedia logo (or any other link) to the toolbar.
    2. Right-click on the new Webopedia shortcut on the toolbar and select Properties.
    3. In the URL (web address) field, delete the web address and enter the following JavaScript code instead:
      javascript:text=document.selection.createRange().text;if(text){while(""+text.charAt(text.length-1)==" ")text=text.substring(0,text.length-1);text=text.replace(/((\s)|(\-))/g,"_");URL ="http://www.webopedia.com/" + text + ".html";definition=window.open(URL,"Webopedia");void(0);}
Be sure to copy the JavaScript code exactly as it is shown here, i.e. starting with “javascript:” and ending with a semi colon.
    4. Click OK. (If a dialog box tells you “The protocol ‘javascript’ does not have a registered program” and asks “Do you want to keep this target anyway?”, choose Yes.)

Using the Webopedia Search Tool:

To use the search tool, just highlight the term you want defined wherever it appears within your Web browser, click on the WebopediaSearch button that you have created in the toolbar of your browser, and a new window will pop up with Webopedia's definition. If you already have a browser window open to Webopedia, the search results will appear in that window instead of a new window. Please note: if the term you are searching for is not in Webopedia's database, you will be redirected to our home page.

For example: after installing the search tool, highlight the following term and then click on the search tool button.

domain

Your browser will then display Webopedia’s definition of “domain.”
