SYSVOL
Last modified: Thursday, June 11, 2009

In Microsoft Windows, the System Volume (Sysvol) is a shared directory that stores the server copy of the domain's public files that must be shared for common access and replication throughout a domain. The term SYSVOL refers to a set of files and folders that reside on the local hard disk of each domain controller in a domain and that are replicated by the File Replication service (FRS). Network clients access the contents of the SYSVOL tree by using the NETLOGON and SYSVOL shared folders. Sysvol uses junction pointsa physical location on a hard disk that points to data that is located elsewhere on your disk or other storage deviceto manage a single instance store.

See "Best Practices for Sysvol Maintenance" from Microsoft Help and Support.

How to rebuild the SYSVOL tree and its content in a domain
The article describes how to use the Burflags registry entry to rebuild each domain controller's copy of the system volume (SYSVOL) tree on all domain controllers in a common Active Directory directory service domain.

See "Best Practices for Sysvol Maintenance" from Microsoft Help and Support.
File system junctions are used extensively in the Sysvol structure and are a feature of NTFS file system 3.0. You must be aware of the existence of junction points and how they operate so that you can avoid data loss or corruption that may occur if you modify the Sysvol structure.

Win Server 2008 Directory Services, SYSVOL DFS Replication
The term Active Directory is most commonly equated with the NTDS.DIT database and its characteristics; however, its functionality is affected in a profound manner by content of the SYSVOL folder, residing by default, directly under the Windows directory (although its placement is customizable) and providing file system storage required to implement a wide range of Group Policies.
