Short for
network operations center, the physical space from which a typically large telecommunications network is managed, monitored and supervised. The NOC coordinates network troubles, provides problem management and
router configuration services, manages network changes, allocates and manages
domain names and
IP addresses, monitors routers,
switches,
hubs and
UPS systems that keep the network operating smoothly, manages the distribution and updating of
software and coordinates with affiliated networks. NOCs also provide network accessibility to users connecting to the network from outside of the physical office space or campus.
